So what is freedom?
I'm ashamed to say
I've never understood the
service to your country part
as well as some as no one in
my immediate family has ever
served
i'm thankful though for those
who do serve
I'm most thankful for
Freedom of religion
Freedom of speech
Freedom to vote
Freedom to be
Believe.

Gonna jump in on this one Linda. See, when I was in Ball State, I protested the war for oil. Didn't see a damned thing good about Bush Sr.'s grudge with Iraq that had anything to do with me except the shit I saw on television and even back then I didn't trust a word of the news, and the fact that an oil man was our president getting in a pissing match with another oilman.
I fell in love for the first time at Ball State, likewise I got my heart broken for the first time. I figured the worst way to hurt myself was to join the army... Maybe the reality pain of being in the army might take away the pain of having my heart broken for the first time.
after a tangent too long for this post, I joined the army, made it to the part where you have to raise your right hand and swear to risk your life for the country that you live in... (almost deleted live in and wrote protected)
Keeping it real was the biggie for me. I loved my country and the freedoms that you spoke of, even though I had little faith in the government that ran the country that I lived in. I had faith in the system, the idea that we vote who makes decisions, and while the choice to defend my country was made out of self punishment, once the choice was made, once I committed myself to that solemn pledge I made, I was a patriot.
I had always been a patriot before, loving my country, thinking we were the shit cause the guy's that wrote the declaration of independence and the constitution were bitchin cool radicals who had it with the Man telling them what to do and so forth, but even back then they knew how money corrupts.
Ever studied the constitution of the United States? Read it open mindedly, without instruction, with the hind thought that it was written by some truly revolutionary minds, who were wild with discovery of the new land in which had been discovered. Knowing that in order to maintain it as a true country, they had to look at all of the past failures and safeguard our country from the crooked power hungry people that exist.
Read it without the ammendments from a legal standpoint, and honor it that it still exists!!! It has taken over 200 years of abuse from people who had sought to abuse the riches of our country and lifestyle and she is still hanging in there. freedom of religion, freedom of speech, all of the freedoms are pointed out, in specific short terms, and each then defended.
Freedom is not that all men are created equal. freedom is not that your rights are not determined by race, sex, age, status, etc. freedom comes from opening your mind to see that all men are not only created equal, but every human soul that you encounter has a lesson or message for you.
Yeah the separation of church and state is in there, as it should be and it is a very wise decision of our forefathers, and the freedom of religion stands very strong. But with all the hub bub bub about under God being taken out of the constitution, where do we draw the line?
there was so much that the current society that I lived in were all just kind of going to sleep.

okay, that current society going to sleep was a thought I was working towards... lol... drinking some exceptionally good Franziskaner Weissbier from my birthday, so bear with me if this turns into a drunken tangent, but I am going to try to keep that from happening by remembering the last line, which had something to do with "under God" being taken out of the pledge of allegiance, (which I happened to write "the constitution" by mistake cause I was so consumed with how I didn't quotate "Under God"
And as I go back to ad quotations around "The constitution" I realize how important quotation marks really are, other wise you all might think that I was claiming to have written the constitution which you all know would be false. and slipping into a monte python frame of mind which is not conducive to me finishing my thought of freedom, so with no further adiou,
Burning flags, taking "Under God" out of the constitution, not standing up during the national anthem, talking trash about the country that you live in, everybody has their perspective on the matters, and that is what matters.
We can live as individuals free to express ourselves in any manner we wish because of the constitiution, which by the way,is riddled,(as in full of, God)
My God, your God, his God, her God, Their God, Our God, past Gods, No
God...
That something that allows us to appreciate our differences and for a few to learn and strengthen oneself with all that comes from the differences, OTHER THAN FEAR... roflm (_)(_)o
That is what I think freedom is. Not necessarily that we each have a freedom to be, but that we can observe each other being and grow from each other's experiences and art... aka life.
God Bless America
happy belated fourth, though it is celebrated every day
the pie man on a drunken roll.

Linda, isn't the freedom to be a great one?
| freedom comes from opening your mind to see that all men are not only created equal, but every human soul that you encounter has a lesson or message for you.

Now, I like that definition, A!

Jo

A - glad I touched a button. I enjoyed your dissertation.
Jo - I agree (not sure A does, but I do). Freedom may mean different things to different people thought some basic truths are self evident. I must admit i get so wrapped up in some things that i don't pay as much attention to some things as i should.
peace to all.
