Once upon a time, a friend of mine in San Francisco who taught art did a unit on StoryPeople in her school. She had the children read my books & then they did their own wooden sculptures & wrote words they'd come up with themselves on them. When they were all done, they hung them in the halls & she took pictures of them & sent them to us. Here's is one of my all-time favorite stories from an 8 year old who did that project:

When you meet someone for the first time, don't kill them

That seems like a good preface to How this whole chat thing works...

We're all pretty much agreed on that here. When you meet someone for the first time, don't kill them. So, you can count on us not getting worked up about almost anything. (Especially now that we have killer editing tools & actual moderators who aren't afraid to use them ) If it seems like something got posted that's wildly inappropriate, it'll disappear quietly & quickly. (Mwa-ha-ha. Power is a wonderful thing.. )

There really are no rules, other than common sense. If there's already a general topic going for the comment you want to make, post your reply there. If there isn't, then start a new topic. We're not generally all that cantankerous, so if you make a mistake & start a topic you didn't really want to start, oh well. It'll get ignored & it'll go to the bottom of the list.

The funny thing is that sometimes the mistakes are the topics that have the most interesting conversations..

But, this is important. It's the absolutely biggest thing to know here. Ready? There is no way to do it right.

It's a conversation. Have fun with it...

Technical notes:

1. Log in if you have a user name. It makes it that much easier to see who you are. But you don't have to log in. It just means you'll be anonymous & no one will perk up & say hi when you show up.. You'll figure out how long you have before the system automatically logs you out. We all learn it, so the first couple of times you have it happen to you, don't worry about it. Log in & post a reply telling us it's you.

2. When you want to start a topic, click on NewTopic

3. When you want to reply to another topic, click on PostReply

4. If you want to use special effects, click on them in the Reply screen. That's things like Boldface, Italics, Underline, Colors, etc. When you click on them, you'll notice a weird code thingie come up in the text box. Put whatever you want to have with a special effect in between the start code & the end code. Usually the start code will have brackets like this: [] with a letter or word in it & the end code will have brackets like this: [/] with the same letter or word in it. It's basic HTML if you've never worked with that stuff before. HTML is the special language that helps a web page display in a browser. If you want to learn more about it, there are whole sites on the web devoted to teaching the basics. Google it & then try them out here in your postings..)

I'm sure I'm forgetting other important stuff, but I'm going to leave that for everyone else. Anything I'm forgetting?

with love, Brian

Dear Akeia,

Here's your handle (as far as I can tell, though I can't tell you what your password is. I can change it & then you can re-change it, but for that you'll need to email me. But I suspect you remember your password. Anyway, here's my email if you need anything more: brian@storypeople.com)

Oh, yeah. The handle is: Muddywater Traveler_1 (notice the space between the two words. & case sensitive, too, so if you print anything else in, it's not going to work...)

Good luck..

with love, Brian

Hello All,
I'm having problems posting a picture, or "avatar" on to my profile. I checked the size and cannot find anything wrong with the picture...
Does anyone have any tips as to how to post an avatar???
thanks,
